Maui Fresh Fish, LLC is completing construction of a large, state-of-the-art fish hatchery on the North shore of Maui in an area commonly referred to as Kahakuloa side. We are simultaneously working on an environmental assessment to lease approximately 100 acres of ocean space one half mile off the South shore of Lanai. Our objective is to raise Opakapaka from eggs at our hatchery and then grow them to market size in our state-of-the-art, 7,000 cubic meter Aquapod ™ net pens submerged in the sea. Maui will benefit during our journey toward profitability and beyond. Maui Fresh Fish will create well-paying jobs for Hawaiian residents, benefit agriculture, improve the "high tech" industry, and ease fish scarcity.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, only 25% of the known marine fish stocks are underexploited or moderately exploited. The remaining 75% are described by the UN FAO as being fully exploited, over exploited, or not exploitable due to their small size. The world's ability to harvest food from its oceans is diminishing, and the demand for seafood is rising dramatically. World demand for seafood is projected to double in the next 15-20 years (an estimated annual growth rate of 4.7%). The answer, according to many, is to develop new ways of utilizing the Earth's oceans to yield increasing stocks of seafood fit for human consumption and industrial use.
